for you who don't know that was an Irish greeting! XD
Today's post if you didn't know is about, oh wait read the title.
From the past few times that I've done a post about the TRUE meaning behind holidays.
Well that's because I don't like it when people celebrate a holiday, and either don't know what it's about, or think it's about something else, like Valentines Day pretty much everyone thinks it's about all the special people in your life, in a way it's true, but it's really about a man NAMED Valentine.
Ok now back to St. Patrick's day.
PS I heard this on an Adventures in Odyssey CD first time I heard it.
There was once a boy name Patrick, he was NOT from Ireland but from Rome.
He was a very rebellious young man.
One day his village was attacked by Ireland, and when his father told him to stay in the house Patrick decided to go out and help fight, and was kidnapped.
Patrick thought this was God's way of punishing him for being so rebellious.
When Patrick got to Ireland, he was first sold to the Druids who were going to use him as a Human Sacrifice to their 'gods!'
A man that worked for the Druids was bring him to the temple, when another man, came along, the man working for the Druids owed him some money, but the he didn't have any money at the time, so instead the man took Patrick and made him work for him on his farm.
Patrick did very well for his master, so well that his master let him take his sheep far away to let them graze, and that was a good thing.
You think, 'He's so far away that he ran away right?' Nope! it was a good time because he gave him time to think, he repented of his youth, and started praying over 100 times a day! (Great example!)
One night, he had a dream, where he saw a boat going back to his home country, that was 2000 miles away! And God was saying to him, "your ship is ready"
After 6 years of working his asked his master if he could go free.
His master said "no" because 'such a good shepherds man was hard to come by'
When Patrick left his master told one of his slaves to tie him to his bed tonight so he wouldn't sneak away, but Patrick was already gone.
He went looking for the ship in his dream.
When he found it, at first he could come aboard, but after a hard prayer he was let aboard helping for some animals on board.
Patrick went back home and found his family.
he stayed there for about a year, (I'm pretty sure couldn't find anything on it) And then one night he had another dream.
It was the people of Ireland's lost souls calling out to him.
So Patrick went back to Ireland. he gathered a few other Christians also.
When Patrick got to Ireland, he decided to go see the King and Queen, but he didn't know that a Druid priest, named, (I don't know how to spell it but it's produced Lock rue) Lokru knew about his coming, got some of his men together and set up an ambush on the way to the kingdom!
But (This is my favorite part of the story) when Patrick and his priest came, Lokru could see that they were men, but the other men, saw only deer!! (Oh my gosh love it!)
Patrick won the favor of the King and Queen.
But one day, on a day that was suppose to be Easter, the King and Queen and the whole kingdom, were celebrating a pagan holiday.
Patrick thought this was wrong.
Also on this day people all over would light a big fire, but before that could happen, the King would light his, that was suppose to be the biggest fire of the year.
And Patrick light his before the King's which was forbidden.
Lokru wanted the King to go there and kill Patrick, but the Queen persuaded, the King to bring Patrick to him.
They were going to sit down, have a drink and talk.
Lokru poisoned Patrick's cup.
But Patrick knew there was poison, and he left.
The Queen wanted to know why he left.
Lokru tried to tell her that he just didn't like to drink with people not of his 'religion.'
Then the King said that he would drink out of Patrick's cup to show that there was not poison.
Lokru begged the King not to drink.
The King dropped it, having no intention of drinking it.
And Lokru was sent to prison.
There's a bit more to the story then that, but that pretty much sums it up! See? Patrick was a great man!
Oh and the reason the symbol for St. Patrick's day is a shamrock is to show.
